In the not-to-distant future, the internet has been replaced and is regarded as an antiquity. Web 2.0 is so out of date that it is only mentioned in passing in the early twenty first century history courses. Instead, there is the Æthrenet - the technological marvel that allows the user to access and download information directly into their minds. Much as the internet of old was, the Æthrenet is both used, and abused, for recreational purposes just as much as the academic.

But the Æthrenet has more than its fair share of secrets. Its creation, surrounded in tragedy and despair, has been rewritten on multiple occasions to suit the needs of the major providers - for they who control the Æthrenet control the Truth.

Wraith, the last surviving member of the team who created the Æthrenet, has seen her own past erased and changed on many occasions. Trapped on the Æthrenet and thus held in a limbo between life and death, Wraith's knowledge that she's no longer entirely human has lead her to spend decades in apathy while employed by largest Æ Provider, Senses Squared, the same company that has removed her name from the history books.

When the structure of the Æthrenet begins crumble and the Providers begin to fear for their profits, they're forced to bring in the one remaining person with intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the Æthrenet. While, Wraith is well aware, and unconcerned, that Senses Squared is withholding information from her, Amelia Crossard, CEO, chairman and holder of over 50% of the shares of Crossard Enterprises, is far more intrigued. Amelia is open and forthright about her desires and knowledge and she requests that Wraith work as her agent to gain incriminating evidence against Senses Squared so that the megalithic company can be brought down. Despite, or, rather, because of, Amelia's directness, Wraith distrusts the woman even more than she does Senses Squared.

But then Amelia makes an offer that Wraith finds difficult to refuse... and Senses Squared has on offer of their own if she can bring back evidence, false or otherwise, that would drive Crossard Enterprises into bankruptcy. Wraith is left standing in the middle and the one with the power (as well as the moral dilemma) - only she is in the position to direct the future of the Æthrenet and, thus, the world.
